You won’t believe what this Korean artist uses to make these stunning masterpieces

If art is an act of creation...then can you still produce art by taking away? Korean artist Park Ji Hyun sure thinks so and is making waves in the art world with his stunning masterpieces created by using a truly unique tool! Just how do his beautiful works come into being? Keep reading to find out the secret behind Park Ji Hyun's creative process and make sure to check out his spectacular artwork!
Artist Park Ji Hyun is not only a pioneer when it comes to art, but also brings a unique philosophy to his artwork by utilizing a very special technique and tool to create his masterpieces. By using incense sticks to literally burn away the canvas, he creates an image on rice paper!
Park explains how he came up with the idea to use incense in his art,
“After reading the books Gulliver’s Travels, Utopia, and Erewhon and seeing the Japanese animated movie Castle in the Sky, I became inspired to develop a relationship between the concept of utopia and the materials that I use in my work.”
After being inspired by the theme of utopia, Park wanted to emphasize the relationship between the concept and his creation process. In Korean "utopia" is "Yi Sang Hwang" and "Hwang" can also mean incense.
Park's art uses incense to 'take away' from his canvas, rather than adding to it. The countless holes created by the burning incense stick may seem empty and meaningless up close on their own, however, when viewed together on the rice paper canvas they come together to produce stunning images of nature.
Park's finished creations are mounted on varnished canvases where the burnt in holes work in concert with the light canvas to create shadows and textures in the eyes of the viewer.
Park explains how his artwork embodies the concept of utopia,
“This balance of dark and light, emptiness and substance is the essence of ‘Yin’ and ‘Yang’ and through this balance utopia is achieved. The subjects addressed in my work range from the natural world to memories of the past, reflecting the constant physical and emotional changes in our environment. It is my hope that the ‘moments’ I captures of my subjects are ones when they are at their most ideal – true utopias. While drawing them with the incense, I am ‘holding’ a split moment of harmony in my hands.”
