PD Lee Jung-sub, who helmed Ji Chang-wook’s action thriller Healer and Park Shin-yang’s underdog legal drama Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho, is returning with a new project called Seven Day Queen. He left KBS last August, and this will be his first project working at Monster Union, a content production group. The drama Seven Day Queen will be a 20-episode sageuk romance, which will be written by Choi Jin-young.
It was previously reported that PD Lee would be working on a drama called Sang-shik and Nara, but his final decision was to go ahead with Seven Day Queen, which will start the casting phase pretty soon. The plot is based on the tragic Joseon legend about the love story between King Jungjong (who overthrew his brother Yeonsangun, the king in currently airing Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People) and his Queen Dankyung, who was crowned and deposed within the span of a week due to rival political factions that controlled the king’s rule.
According to historical legend, after the queen was dethroned and removed from the palace, the king would walk to the outside royal pavilion every day and sigh as he gazed at a mountain in her direction. After hearing this, she placed a red skirt, her favorite to wear in the palace, on a rock on the mountain face so he would know that she was well and that she still yearned for him. To this day, the legend of Inwang Mountain and the skirt boulder is famous throughout Korea.
PD Lee Jung-sub has a solid list of credits including hit drama Baker King Kim Tak-gu, and is no stranger to sageuk (he directed Kang Ji-hwan’s Hong Gil-dong). He seems to do male-centric hero stories well, so I’m curious to see what he’ll do with this drama, which sounds like an ardent love story with a political backdrop.
